UHV system for in-situ studies of nanostructures by nuclear resonance scatering of synchrotron radiation [project 015]

Ultra high vacuum system for preparation, characteri­sation and investigation of the growth, diffusion, lattice dynamics and magnetism in thin films and nano-struc­tured samples.

Specification

The Nuclear Resonance Scattering (NRS) experiments are performed in the NRS chamber, mounted on a 2-circle diffractometer which allows experiments in grazing-incidence scattering geometry over the tem­perature range 100 K to 2000 K. Two diametrical Be windows are utilised for the Nuclear Forward Scatte­ring (NFS) experiments. A third Be window allows for the detection of the Nuclear Inelastic Scattered (NIS) radiation.

Ultrathin films as well as multilayer structured samples can be deposited in the preparation chamber using two molecular beam evaporators. Standard sur­face analysis techniques of Low Energy Electron Dif­fraction and Auger Electron Spectroscopy are applied in order to control the structure and composition of the prepared samples.

A sophisticated manipulator allows for cooling/heating of the sample in the range 100 K to 2200 K.

The distribution chamber, equipped with a sample-transfer mechanism, serves for sample exchange between different chambers. The storage chamber with the capacity to store up to 6 special sample holders is directly attached to the distribution chamber. The sample holders can be introduced into the UHV environment via the load-lock. The load-lock’s port allows for attachment of a UHV transport box to transport the prepared and characterised samples un­der UHV conditions.
